Defining "The Economy" Beyond the Abstract - VP

In her address, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang challenged her colleagues with "homework": to reflect on what the economy means to the average Ghanaian. She argued that true economic success is not found in

macroeconomic data alone but in the tangible dignity of work and the stability of household lives.

Key Pillars of the PAGE Vision

  • Sectoral Stability: Providing security for teachers, nurses, and laborers.

  • Market Reliability: Ensuring fair prices and reliable markets for farmers.

  • Business Growth: Creating predictable costs and access to credit for traders and small business owners.

  • Youth & Gender: Developing skills and opportunities specifically for young people and women.

  • Infrastructure: Powering aspirations through reliable electricity and safe water.

The 13-Member "Economic Dream Team"

The PAGE is composed of a non-partisan blend of private sector titans, former regulators, and academics. This group is designed to eliminate overlapping governance structures—specifically replacing the former Economic Management Team (EMT)—and reports directly to the President.

Mandate: From Crisis to "Durable Success"

President Mahama has charged PAGE with providing strategic counsel on several critical frontiers as Ghana prepares to exit its IMF program in April 2026:

  1. Macroeconomic Management: Fiscal consolidation, debt sustainability, and coherence between fiscal and monetary policy.

  2. Structural Reform: Driving the 24-Hour Economy initiative and the Accelerated Export Development Program.

  3. Investment Mobilization: Re-anchoring market expectations to attract long-term private capital.

  4. Expert Negotiation: Contributing to Ghana’s engagements with bilateral and multilateral partners.

"Our mandate is clear and demanding: to provide independent, rigorous, and practical advice... testing assumptions and proposing solutions grounded in Ghana’s realities." — Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang

The Bottom Line

The inauguration of PAGE signals a move toward a more inclusive, evidence-based economic governance culture. By bringing together seasoned veterans and academic researchers, the administration aims to move away from "sentimental" policy-making toward a disciplined, export-led growth strategy that makes the economy feel less "distant" to the Ghanaian people.
