Health First in the Western Region: Ghana Gas to Register 20,000 Residents for NHIS

In a massive scaling up of its social intervention strategy, the Ghana National Gas Limited Company (GNGLC) has officially launched a one-month intensive health drive to register

and renew National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) cards for 20,000 residents across the Western Region.

The exercise, launched by the new CEO, Madam Judith Adjoba Blay, marks a historic pivot for the company. Under the theme "Your Health, Our Priority," Ghana Gas is aiming to register nearly as many people in a single year as it did in the entire previous decade.

1. A Strategic "Health Reset" Under New Leadership

While Ghana Gas has a long history of community support, the 2026 initiative represents a significantly more aggressive CSR target.

  • The Comparison: Between 2014 and 2024, the company registered a total of 25,000 people.

  • The 2026 Target: Under Madam Adjoba Blay, the company is targeting 20,000 beneficiaries in just one year.

  • The Scope: The exercise covers 78 communities across eight key districts in the company’s catchment area.

2. Geographic Reach: Bringing Care to the Doorstep

For many residents in the "project-affected" communities, accessing an NHIS office previously required expensive and time-consuming travel to urban centers like Half-Assini or Nkroful. This exercise effectively removes that barrier.

Districts and Initial Launch Sites: | District | Kick-off Communities | | :--- | :--- | | Ellembelle | Atuabo | | Jomoro | Ekabaku | | Nzema-East | Nsein | | Others | Ahanta-West, Mpohor, EKMA, STMA, Shama |

3. More Than Just Insurance: The Infrastructure Road Map

Mr. Henry Anlimah, Assistant Manager at the CSR Department, emphasized that this NHIS drive is the first phase of a broader "Resilience Agenda" for the Western Region.

Beyond primary healthcare access, Ghana Gas has committed to rolling out new projects in:

  • Education: Construction and refurbishment of school blocks.

  • Sanitation: Improved waste management and water systems for coastal communities.

  • Health Infrastructure: Support for local clinics to handle the influx of newly insured patients.

4. Community Sentiment: "No More Long Distances"

The response from beneficiaries has been overwhelmingly positive. Residents at Ekabaku noted that the "doorstep registration" saves them significant transport costs and allows the elderly and vulnerable—who could not previously make the trip to Jomoro—to finally gain legal access to medical care.

"Primary health care is critical, and we are committed to supporting the people within our operational areas to reap the benefits of our CSR initiatives."Mr. Henry Anlimah

The Bottom Line

The 2026 NHIS drive is a clear signal that the "Adjoba Blay era" at Ghana Gas will be defined by impact at scale. By ensuring that 20,000 neighbors are fully integrated into the national health safety net, Ghana Gas is moving beyond being just an energy giant to becoming a fundamental partner in the Western Region's human development.
