In a resounding validation of rural healthcare resilience, the Bongo District Health Directorate has emerged as the "star performer" of the newly established Upper East Regional Health Performance Excellence Awards. Clinching four major honors, Bongo outperformed 14 other districts to be named the Top
Health Directorate in the Region based on 2025 clinical data and service delivery indicators.
The awards, initiated by the Regional Director of Health Services, Dr. Braimah Baba Abubakari, were designed to motivate staff and facilities to maintain high-quality, people-centered service across the region's diverse landscapes.
1. The Bongo Sweep: A Triple Threat in Healthcare
Bongo's dominance spanned the entire spectrum of care, from administrative oversight to frontline clinical services.
Bongo District’s 2025 Award Tally:
-
1st Place: Best District Health Directorate (Overall Winner).
-
2nd Place: Best District Hospital (Bongo District Hospital, following War Memorial Hospital).
-
3rd Place: Best Health Centre (Zorko Health Centre).
-
3rd Place: District Health Information Management Systems (DHIMS) Data Quality.
2. Regional Highlights & Notable Winners
While Bongo took the overall crown, the awards highlighted pockets of excellence across the Upper East Region:

-
Health Centre Category: Basyonde Health Centre (Tempane District) emerged first, followed by the Presbyterian Health Centre at Woriyanga.
-
CHPS Excellence: Musidema CHPS (Builsa South) led the category, followed by Sakaa CHPS and Pitanga CHPS.
-
Data Quality: Bolgatanga East was recognized as the leader in Health Information Management.
3. Motivating the Frontline
Mr. Paschal Dongzuing, Chairman of the Awards Committee, explained that the prizes—which included motorbikes, laptops, stethoscopes, and iPads—were specifically chosen to enhance the operational capacity of the winning facilities. He noted that while time constraints limited the 2025 ceremony to institutional honors, the 2026 edition will expand to include individual staff and manager categories.
Ms. Estella Abazesi, Bongo District Director of Health Services, credited the success to her team’s "sacrificial sweat" under often difficult conditions. "This recognition is a catalyst," she stated, vowing that Bongo would aim to top every single indicator in the next review.
The Bottom Line
The Bongo District’s victory represents a "Quality Reset" for the Upper East Region. By moving beyond "mere service" to "performance excellence," the directorate is proving that resource constraints are no barrier to high-quality care. As the region prepares for the 2026 performance cycle, the "Bongo Standard" has now become the benchmark for every health worker from Bolgatanga to Tempane.
