The "Ethics Reset": Nana SKB Asante Backs Legal Education Reform and Constitutional Review

In a powerful call for professional integrity, the Paramount Chief of the Asokore Traditional Area, Nana Susubribri Krobea Asante (Nana Dr. SKB Asante), has urged the next generation of legal practitioners to prioritize ethics over "quick wealth." Speaking at Lancaster University Ghana’s "An Evening with the Legends" in Accra on Tuesday, the distinguished jurist

provided a roadmap for the future of Ghanaian law, centered on decentralizing education and strengthening constitutional frameworks.

1. Breaking the Monopoly: The 2025 Reform Bill

A major highlight of Nana’s address was his enthusiastic support for the Legal Education Reform Bill, 2025. This landmark legislation, currently moving through Parliament, is expected to be passed by the end of 2026.

Key Pillars of the Reform:

  • End of Monopoly: Abolishing the exclusive right of the Ghana School of Law (Makola) to provide professional legal training.

  • National Bar Examination: Transitioning to a standardized, central examination to ensure quality control across all accredited law schools.

  • Duration Reset: Reducing the professional training period from two years to one year to expedite the entry of qualified lawyers into the workforce.

  • Institutional Diversity: Expressing openness to new professional bodies, such as the Law Society of Ghana, to foster competition and excellence.

2. The Anatomy of Legal Integrity

Nana SKB Asante reminded students that the legal profession is a "public trust." He emphasized that a lawyer’s duty is to be the guardian of the Rule of Law, which requires a specific set of core values.

Value Impact on the Legal System
Trustworthiness Protects client interests and ensures confidential data security.
Impartiality Guarantees that justice is served without bias or political influence.
Patience Resisting the "quick wealth" acquisition that leads to corruption and malpractice.

3. Constitutional Evolution: Addressing the Gaps

Beyond education, Nana commended the Constitution Review Committee for its work in identifying implementation gaps from the 2010 and 2023 reviews.

  • Identifying Challenges: The committee is tasked with reconciling past recommendations to ensure the 1992 Constitution remains a "living document."

  • Public Participation: Nana urged Ghanaians to move beyond passive observation and offer "constructive criticism" to help modernize the national framework.

  • Dr. Emmanuel Arthur’s View: The CEO of Lancaster University Ghana echoed this, noting that many past legal practices have become "obsolete" and require a 2026-standard update.

4. Mentorship for a Pan-African Future

The program, hosted by Professor Francis Botchway, highlights a shift toward experiential learning. With 50% of the student body hailing from other African nations like Nigeria and Sierra Leone, the initiative aims to produce "distinctive graduates" who understand the broader continental legal landscape.

The Bottom Line

Nana Dr. SKB Asante’s message is a "Professional Reset." By backing the decentralization of legal education and calling for a constitutional refresh, he is positioning Ghana’s legal system to be more accessible, efficient, and ethical. For the law student at Lancaster University, the lesson was clear: success is not measured by the speed of wealth, but by the weight of one’s integrity.
