President Mahama Pushes for Completion of Sunyani SHS Science Blocks to End Double-Track

As part of the final leg of his two-day "Resetting Ghana Tour" of the Bono Region, President John Dramani Mahama conducted an intensive inspection of critical infrastructure projects in Sunyani. The President’s primary focus was the Sunyani Senior High School (SHS), where he issued a directive to contractors to accelerate work to facilitate the school’s

transition back to a single-track academic system.

The President emphasized that the timely handover of these facilities is non-negotiable for the regional "Education Reset" scheduled for the 2026/2027 academic year.

1. The GETFUND Academic Expansion

The projects at Sunyani SHS, funded by the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFUND), are designed to solve the acute classroom and laboratory deficits that necessitated the double-track system.

Project Breakdown at Sunyani SHS: | Facility | Capacity/Design | Current Status | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | Science Classroom Block | Two-storey, 12-unit structure | Ongoing Construction | | Science Laboratory Block | Two-storey, 12-unit specialized lab | Ongoing Construction | | Staff Accommodation | Two semi-detached, two-storey flats | Ongoing Construction |

2. Ending the "Double-Track" System

President Mahama noted that the return to a single-track system—where all students in a particular year group attend school at the same time—is dependent on the physical capacity of the school.

  • The Goal: To eliminate the long vacations and staggered schedules that have characterized the double-track era.

  • The Strategy: By completing the 12-unit classroom and laboratory blocks simultaneously, the school can accommodate a larger population of students in a single stream without compromising the quality of science education.

3. National Security and Aviation Infrastructure

Beyond education, the President’s tour touched on two other vital sectors: Security and Aviation.

  • National Signals Bureau: The President visited the newly constructed Bono Regional Office of the National Signals Bureau in Sunyani. This facility is expected to enhance regional intelligence gathering and communication security.

  • Sunyani Airport (Nsoatre): The President also inspected the proposed site for the Sunyani Airport at Nsoatre in the Sunyani West Municipality. This project is a key component of the 2026 "Aviation Reset," aimed at making the Bono Region a major transit hub for North-West Ghana and Ivory Coast.

4. A Two-Day Regional Momentum

The Sunyani inspection follows the President's visit to the Jinijini-Sampa road and engagements with cashew farmers. The tour has consistently focused on three pillars: Infrastructure, Productivity, and Service Delivery.

The Bottom Line

The inspection at Sunyani SHS is a clear signal that the "Resetting Ghana" agenda prioritizes the return to a stable academic calendar. By using GETFUND resources to build specialized science labs and classrooms, the government is attempting to ensure that the Bono Region’s youth are prepared for a high-tech economy. For the students and staff of Sunyani SHS, the message is one of urgency: The labs must be ready for the new term.
