In a powerful gesture of interfaith harmony and corporate gratitude, MTN Ghana and MobileMoney Limited (MML) have presented GH¢200,000 in cash and a massive consignment of food items to the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr. Osman Nuhu Sharubutu.
The presentation, held at the Chief Imam's residence in New Fadama on Wednesday, marks the 17th consecutive year the telecommunications giant has supported the Muslim community. This year’s gesture carries extra weight as MTN Ghana celebrates 30 years of operations in the country.
1. Supporting the Pillars of Eidul Fitr
As the month of Ramadan draws to a close, the donation is designed to support the communal spirit of Eidul Fitr, which is set to be celebrated across Ghana this Friday, March 20, 2026.
The "Eid Bounty" Breakdown:
-
Financial Support: GH¢200,000 to support community celebrations in Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi, and Tamale.
-
Essential Provisions: 30 bags of rice, 20 cartons of vegetable oil, and 10 bags of sugar.
-
Celebration Staples: One ram, assorted drinks (Bel, Milo, Tea), and dozens of cartons of mineral water and milk.
2. Beyond Donations: On-the-Ground Service
Mr. Ibrahim Misto, Chief Digital Officer of MTN Ghana, emphasized that the company’s support extends beyond financial aid. During the Eid festivities, MTN and MoMo will deploy dedicated Customer Engagement Stands at key prayer grounds and community hubs.
Mobile Services at Eid Locations: | Service | Objective | | :--- | :--- | | Fraud Education | Real-time sensitization on protecting MoMo wallets during high-transaction periods. | | Issue Resolution | On-the-spot fixing of SIM registration or network challenges. | | Transaction Hubs | Facilitating easy cash-outs and transfers for families sharing gifts. |
3. A Legacy of Peace and Loyalty
The Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr. Sharubutu, received the items with a prayer for the management and staff of the companies. He noted that gratitude to fellow humans is a prerequisite for gratitude to God.
For nearly two decades, MTN has focused its Eid support on areas like Nima and Accra New Town, using the festive period to promote peaceful coexistence. Additionally, the company remains a primary sponsor of the National Hajj Board, assisting thousands of Ghanaians in their annual pilgrimage to Mecca.
4. 30 Years of Service
The 2026 donation serves as a "Gratitude Reset" for MTN. By aligning its corporate values of generosity and empathy with the spiritual significance of the Islamic month of Shawwāl, the company is reinforcing its role as a "national institution" rather than just a service provider.
The Bottom Line
As Ghana prepares for the Eidul Fitr public holiday, the partnership between MTN, MoMo, and the Office of the Chief Imam stands as a model for corporate-religious engagement. Through the deployment of fraud prevention education alongside food and cash, MTN is ensuring that the Muslim community can celebrate with both security and dignity.
